In February 2012, I was taken on by the Glasgow Film Festival to cover 10 of the festivals events. My duties were split with Stow College in Glasgow who produced videos for another 10 events.

For this particular project i was a one man crew, using the Panasonic AF101 camera.
Based in the Glasgow Film Theatre with a Final Cut edit suite, I was provided with the contact details of all of the interviewees.

I covered all bases, I made initial contact, performed pre interview research, wrote all interview questions, filmed and performed the interviews, performed the final edit and uploaded to youtube with appropriate metadata (also written by me).

Each video ran along a basic structure. Filming of the film’s intro and Q & A, followed by interview with the special guest. I used clips/trailers/images from the film as cutaways (when available)

Sadly the budget didn’t cover any lavish title sequences, so I created something simple in After Effects which was quite well received and placed at the beginning of all of the videos.

Here is one of the videos, featuring veteran actor and first time Director Dexter Fletcher.

I also captured a taste of the opening party and cut together a small montage using one of the tracks played live on the evening.

I also filmed the Scottish Bafta hosted interview with Brian Cox, which i scaled down to 5 videos of highlights. One of which he talks about landing the role of Hannibal Lecter.

Other interviews included Writer Irvine Welsh, Director Bertrand Tevarnier and Jazz Legend Annie Ross, as well as a number of talented up and coming Actors and Directors.

Throughout March and April 2012, I worked with Great Silence Media to cover the Edinburgh International Science Festival and create a series of web videos to archive some of the festival’s events.

I was tasked with filming and editing. I used my own Panasonic AF101 and edited on Final Cut Pro. Many of the videos followed a set ENG style pattern. I would shoot an interview on site, as well as a number of cutaways, the interview would be stripped down to a couple of minutes and covered with the cutaways captured.

This video shows the typical format of most of the content.

I was also on hand to capture shots of the festival’s opening party. These shots, again using the Panasonic AF101, were cut into a little montage, giving a flavour of the evenings events.

I was also tasked with capturing a flash mob at the National Museum of Scotland, which was filmed mostly with a single camera, cut together and uploaded within 3 hours.

Finally, I’m throwing in this video, because it was a lot of fun to shoot!

The rest of the vids can be found below.

Last year I was asked to help put together a small making of promo for an Edinburgh based feature called ‘A Spanking in Paradise’ by writer/first time director Wayne Thallon.

The film was to debut at the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2010.

Director David Lumsden helmed the making of project and we both came up with this 3 minute promo.

The film itself went on two win two Trailblazer awards and was included in the Festival’s ‘Best of the Fest’ category.

More Recently Dave and I returned to the footage to create this follow up video, which focuses on a big scene in the film.

This is part one of my behind the scenes on the short film ‘boat’, we will be posting more videos in the coming weeks.

This part covers the story of the film and features concept art from Anthony Devine and footage from the 4 day shoot in Edinburgh.

This is an extract from the current Evening News feature on ‘Boat’

David, 28, said: “It’s a story about a post-apocalyptic world featuring a father and his son who are basically trying to survive at sea and find a place to live. They sail between different buildings, a bit like a version of The Road on water, looking for somewhere to call home. The father is under a lot of pressure and there are a lot of dream-like sequences that might be real or might in his head, which makes it a bit like Inception.

“The reason Edinburgh has become that way is only really hinted at, but there’s an environmental element to it.”

After writing the film in late 2010, David found matte painter Anthony Devine on the internet. He has designed all the backgrounds, including the city centre, crumbling flats at Sighthill and a submerged Forth Road Bridge. The crew also includes his friend, Edinburgh-based Katie Crook, who has produced the short under her company, Blue Iris Films.

The team spent four days filming Boat in January, three of which were shot using a green screen that will have the backgrounds added to it later, and one day beside Edinburgh Castle.
